About Starting Pitcher Rating
A different way to measure baseball greatness, built one start at a time.
SPR
Starting Pitcher Rating
Starting Pitcher Rating is an independently owned baseball database dedicated to grading every Major League starting pitcher one game at a time.
1898–2026
Game-by-game starting pitcher history
Built for fans who love daily performance, historical rankings, and baseball research.
1 Start
One grade at a time
Every start contributes to a pitcher's season, career, franchise, and historical SPR profile.
A Different Way to Measure Baseball Greatness
Unlike traditional statistics that evaluate a pitcher only after an entire season has been completed, Starting Pitcher Rating evaluates every individual start. Each performance receives an SPR grade based on the quality of that day's pitching, allowing pitchers to be measured by the consistency and quality of their performances over time.
The SPR database currently spans every Major League season from 1898 through 2026, creating one of the largest game-by-game historical starting pitcher databases available.
Why Grade Every Start?
Traditional baseball statistics are built by accumulating season totals. While season totals are incredibly valuable, they often hide how a pitcher actually performed throughout the season.
Two pitchers may finish with identical ERAs or WAR while taking completely different paths to get there. One pitcher may perform consistently over six months, while another alternates between dominant outings and difficult starts.
By evaluating every individual start, SPR measures consistency alongside dominance. Every performance contributes to a pitcher's overall SPR average, creating another way to study pitchers across careers, seasons, franchises, and baseball history.
Explore 127+ Years of Baseball History
Starting Pitcher Rating allows baseball fans to explore more than a century of pitching performances through searchable leaderboards, player pages, historical rankings, team rankings, era comparisons, and daily start grades.
Whether you're researching Cy Young, Nolan Ryan, Pedro Martinez, Clayton Kershaw, or your favorite pitcher from childhood, SPR is designed to make baseball history easy to explore.
Many users simply enjoy taking a trip through baseball history and rediscovering forgotten greats from every generation.
Rather Than Replacing Traditional Statistics
Starting Pitcher Rating is designed to complement traditional statistics by providing another lens through which baseball fans can compare pitchers from every era. The rankings are not opinion-based. Public pages display final grades and rankings while the underlying formula remains proprietary.

Accuracy & Data Corrections
Starting Pitcher Rating is independently researched, developed, and maintained by one baseball enthusiast with a passion for the history and statistics of the game.
Every player page, game grade, historical ranking, and daily update is built and maintained independently. We feel confident in our data and take tremendous pride in the accuracy of the work, but occasional errors can occur — particularly during the active 2026 season as new games are processed each day.
Our goal is to complete daily updates by 10:00 AM Eastern Time following the previous day's games. On occasion, larger game schedules, technical issues, source-data corrections across the industry, or additional verification may delay an update.
The 1898–2025 historical database has been extensively researched, audited, and verified through numerous reviews. If you believe you have found an error in the current season or elsewhere on the website, please email startingpitcherrating@gmail.com with the player name, game date, and a brief description of the potential issue.
Batter Rating
Batter Rating (BR) is a completely separate database dedicated exclusively to hitters. BR uses its own proprietary rating system and membership, allowing baseball fans to study offensive performances with the same game-by-game philosophy used throughout Starting Pitcher Rating.
Stripe checkout, registration, account emails, and BCC tracking stay centralized through Batter Rating. SPR Pro and Bundle members use the same account email on both sites.
Batter Rating and Starting Pitcher Rating are independently developed projects created for baseball fans who enjoy discovering new ways to study the game.
The databases continue to grow every season, with new features, historical research, and tools being added regularly. Thank you for being part of the Starting Pitcher Rating community.
